J39nB459_p0720c01僧參,師把住云:「漿水錢且置,還我草鞋錢來。」僧無語,J39nB459_p0720c02師托開云:「將謂你是個人,原來是個頑皮俗漢。」僧擬J39nB459_p0720c03進語,師喝退。
J39nB459_p0720c04僧問:「如何是和尚家風?」師云:「三腳鐺煮淡黃虀。」僧云:J39nB459_p0720c05「忽遇客來時,如何秪待?」師云:「一碗兩碗。」
J39nB459_p0720c06守府杜公問:「如何是佛?」師云:「無限丹青手,都盧畫不J39nB459_p0720c07成。」公指佛像云:「爭柰這個何?」師云:「一翳在眼,空花亂J39nB459_p0720c08墜。」
J39nB459_p0720c09僧問:「如何是第一玄?」師便打。進云:「如何是第二玄?」師J39nB459_p0720c10復打。進云:「如何是第三玄?」師云:「你問太煞。」進云:「三玄J39nB459_p0720c11已蒙師指示,向上一路作麼生?」師打云:「一任舉似諸J39nB459_p0720c12方。」
J39nB459_p0720c13趙孝廉問:「儒釋之道,是一是二?」師云:「醋梅同酸,生熟J39nB459_p0720c14異味。」廉笑云:「三教本來一家,有甚生熟異味?」師云:「雖J39nB459_p0720c15然如是,也要相公皺眉一場始得。」
J39nB459_p0720c16學正王公問:「和尚如何行持?」師云:「早晨喫白粥,下晚J39nB459_p0720c17又覺饑。」
J39nB459_p0720c18僧問:「一法若有,毘盧墮在凡夫;萬法若無,普賢失其J39nB459_p0720c19境界。去此二途,請師一接?」師云:「王瓜茄子。」僧云:「意旨J39nB459_p0720c20如何?」師云:「地肥偏大。」
J39nB459_p0720c21李明府問:「如何是西來大意?」師云:「日頭東畔出。」府云:J39nB459_p0720c22「不會,請和尚指示。」師云:「佛法盡隨他爛卻,舌頭終不J39nB459_p0720c23為人談。」

J39nB459_p0720c29「龍池迸出獅子,踏斷諸方葛藤,虛空中結窟,開人禾J39nB459_p0720c30之眼目,為萬世之宗乘,三山中豎幟,南海上歸隱,遺J39nB459_p0721a01下未了公案。幸我法兄和尚繼繼承承,建法幢於楞J39nB459_p0721a02嚴古剎,權衡龍藏,撥明祖燈,可謂旃檀林裡旃檀,獅J39nB459_p0721a03子窟中獅子。雖然與麼,且道如何是未了公案?」顧視J39nB459_p0721a04左右云:「路遙夜長,休把火,大家吹滅暗中行。」

J39nB459_p0721a06「者個沒情面老漢,相似個戴角猛虎,把斷要津,不通J39nB459_p0721a07凡聖,孰能搆得?至今歸隱,山崩海枯,日月暗黑,不肖J39nB459_p0721a08秪得斫額而望。何故?親承入室之孫子,不同門外之J39nB459_p0721a09遊人。」

J39nB459_p0721a11「▆踞正覺,將一個死貓頭東拋西擲,賣弄一生,惜乎J39nB459_p0721a12無人酬價,惹得泥牛忿關,虛空撲落,大地平沉,覓之J39nB459_p0721a13不得。雖然如是,過量事須還過量人。秪如酬價一句J39nB459_p0721a14作麼生道?」良久,云:「吳門劍池深。」

J39nB459_p0721a16「者老和尚面鐵志鋼,不隨大隊,衲僧叢裏奪標,戒壇J39nB459_p0721a17之中拔萃,偷出火宅眾生,蓮邦安入佛位,退步踏翻J39nB459_p0721a18滄溟,抽身虛空粉碎。雖則與麼作略,到底者個不會。J39nB459_p0721a19大眾且道:是那個聻?」遂拈香,云:「淡煙籠竹一堆愁,細J39nB459_p0721a20雨灑花千點淚。」

J39nB459_p0721a22「浮生幻化,全體放下,休擬議,莫返復,紅塵多少人,孰J39nB459_p0721a23肯效劉、阮、馬?公乃紅塵之丈夫,不昧靈山之記莂,捨J39nB459_p0721a24基建剎,養育龍蛇,恒為藍田種子,永作苦海津梁,不J39nB459_p0721a25幸今日世緣畢矣。山僧與居士稱方外莫逆,無以為J39nB459_p0721a26贈,但願居士用大圓覺永作住場,身心安居,平等性J39nB459_p0721a27智。何故如此?得人一牛,還人一馬。且道猶有差別處J39nB459_p0721a28也無?更聽一偈:片片白雲挂孝來,商飆陣陣滿林哀,J39nB459_p0721a29汗衫卸卻歸空去,脫化蓮胎越聖階。」

J39nB459_p0721b01「一別吾師數十年,家私蕩盡對誰言?今日吾師歸去J39nB459_p0721b02也,幾多懽喜幾傷顏?不肖拜掃徹底空囊,秪是偷天J39nB459_p0721b03賣日,換得雲門餅、金牛飯、趙州茶、曹山酒、汾陽豬首,J39nB459_p0721b04權且供養。大眾會麼?抱璞不須頻墮淚,來朝更獻楚J39nB459_p0721b05王看。」
書問
J39nB459_p0721b07與友人
J39nB459_p0721b08吾兄所教之事,一一奉命。前者深擾,多承厚意,常念J39nB459_p0721b09吾兄德行兼全,柱石法門有光先德,而弟愧不及枲J39nB459_p0721b10第蠡管之見,惟是暖其衣、飽其食,外無剝啄、內無追J39nB459_p0721b11呼,不知叢林是何物?檀信脂膏以何消?僧眾日用將J39nB459_p0721b12甚作主宰?古德云:「未明者個空住世,有人與你算湯J39nB459_p0721b13水錢;未明者個空行腳,有人與你算草鞋錢。果無懼J39nB459_p0721b14乎?」但叨居林下、守拙泉林,只以偷閒度日以終餘年,J39nB459_p0721b15每慕白眼青睛,其柰時勢為艱、法久成弊,珠目無論、J39nB459_p0721b16金石難齊,幸喜早逢高鑑,彼我何更饒舌哉?且愧泥J39nB459_p0721b17水多端、葛藤繁露,萬望吾兄了明生死大事,不忘觀J39nB459_p0721b18音妙應,火裡燦朵芙蕖。吾兄若要承當者事,先須辦J39nB459_p0721b19一雙不受人瞞底眼孔、百折不回底腳跟、真真實實J39nB459_p0721b20肚腸,把從前底絡索一齊放下,向食息起居處、饑餐J39nB459_p0721b21渴飲處、閑坐困眠處時刻檢點,若是岸柳溪煙、層巒J39nB459_p0721b22疊嶂,又與道遠矣。古人欲明者事,餐風宿雨,歷遍百J39nB459_p0721b23城,不以為勞。吾兄必發精進,莫要當面錯過。善知識J39nB459_p0721b24亦非從天降下、從地湧出底,蓋古今如長夜,惟善知J39nB459_p0721b25識先醒覺,得興慈運悲,搖醒幾個夢中人?果能踏破J39nB459_p0721b26祖師關頭,一任春遊芳草地、夏賞綠荷池、秋飲黃花J39nB459_p0721b27酒、冬吟白雪詩,只恐偷心未歇,時時捕風捉影。若論J39nB459_p0721b28佛法階級,則曰參禪、曰習教、曰持律,如熏修行履,不J39nB459_p0721b29過訪知識、住叢林、入深山,一口吞盡佛祖、街前解下J39nB459_p0721b30布袋。時當末法,豈多再見?但有根性不常者,見人持J39nB459_p0721c01戒即欲搭衣,何曾見他忍辱來?見人居山即欲結茅,J39nB459_p0721c02何曾見他死心來?見人參方亦去迤邐行腳,何曾見J39nB459_p0721c03他覲問知識來?見人住世亦去修菴,何曾見他體取J39nB459_p0721c04叢林規矩來?見人講經卻也分文別義,何曾見他點J39nB459_p0721c05出經中旨趣來?見人談禪卻也擎拳豎指,何曾見他J39nB459_p0721c06實悟實證來?所以名或過于佛祖,實乃下于凡庸,隱J39nB459_p0721c07則近于啞羊,顯則同乎說客。若是者等師僧,于我衲J39nB459_p0721c08僧門下提草履,也不用他如是瑣瑣者。只要吾兄向J39nB459_p0721c09大道上直步長安,弟若不將崎嶇嶮巇路徑一一道J39nB459_p0721c10破,又恐中途被柴柵纏繳。雲門道:「觀音菩薩將錢買J39nB459_p0721c11胡餅,放下手云:『原來是饅首。』」若委悉得者則公案,方J39nB459_p0721c12知大海邊渴殺多少人,大倉中饑殺多少人。故曰:「悟J39nB459_p0721c13了還是舊時人,不改舊時行履處。」若認奇言妙句,猶J39nB459_p0721c14是缽外安柄,畫蛇添足,只知背脊朝天,不覺腦門著J39nB459_p0721c15地,引蔓牽藤,尋香逐臭,惑亂後人,無有了日。見他談J39nB459_p0721c16柄戲論之詞,便乃書之寫之,珍之重之,此係蜣螂彈J39nB459_p0721c17子而已。金屑雖貴,入眼成瞖。豈不聞好事不如無乎?J39nB459_p0721c18從上古人不是資談柄、恃聰明、圖名譽、依樣畫葫蘆,J39nB459_p0721c19參須真參、悟須實悟、證須實證,密密綿綿,或順或逆,J39nB459_p0721c20忙裡閒裡,打成一片。得斯受用,如護明珠,遇境逢緣,J39nB459_p0721c21把得定,作得主。雖居世間,不捨道法,照耀古今,眼目J39nB459_p0721c22人天,到者田地,生死去來,得大自在,作個林間翛散J39nB459_p0721c23士,世外空閒人。者事亦非聰明廣記,要自有生以來,J39nB459_p0721c24一點虛靈不昧,具得一副金剛骨頭,不曾依他勸化,J39nB459_p0721c25突出一個乾淨念頭,志願學佛學祖,拔濟先人,提挈J39nB459_p0721c26同類,卻把一枚古鏡貼在胸中,參照古人從前滿肚J39nB459_p0721c27絡索,自然法法精妙,投入我鏡,方纔行腳。到者裡,已J39nB459_p0721c28具一隻擇法眼睛,始可遇人。若逢真正烹佛煉祖鉗J39nB459_p0721c29錘,一語相投,全身跳入火聚中,踢翻爐韝,師資一場J39nB459_p0721c30漏逗,打破鏡子。自從胡亂後,三十年不少鹽醬,鐘樓J39nB459_p0722a01上念讚,床腳下栽菜,任爾所為。雖然如是,說得一丈,J39nB459_p0722a02不如行取一尺。吾兄趁此色力強健,了明生死大事,J39nB459_p0722a03不惟自已參學事畢,亦乃法門有望。弟不覺忉忉怛J39nB459_p0722a04怛,說到者裡,諒吾兄鑑之,必不我罪也。弟深愧貧囊,J39nB459_p0722a05無能為寄,惟有陳年葛藤,信筆一紙,聊代面談,惟祈J39nB459_p0722a06鑒之。尚容躬叩,弗一。
復石門崔學正
J39nB459_p0722a08摶風激水,出北圖南,乃世諦能事。盡性立命,超佛越J39nB459_p0722a09祖,又出世之本旨。護法取魚乎?熊掌乎?文章事業,實J39nB459_p0722a10同孔雲。恩愛田園,還類肘柳。既然誠信,庸詎山僧嘖J39nB459_p0722a11嘖耶?石門一晤,果屬奇緣。忽接來翰,猶如覿面。若論J39nB459_p0722a12這段大事,最先要個信字。信能成一切種智,信能證J39nB459_p0722a13菩提道果,信能為聖為賢,信能超佛越祖,信能度一J39nB459_p0722a14切苦厄。乃至忠孝節義,盡性立命,超度宗親,拯拔群J39nB459_p0722a15迷。世出世間,經大傳遠,無不從此一信而建立。誠能J39nB459_p0722a16全忠全孝,世間心盡矣。誠能盡性立命,出世間心盡J39nB459_p0722a17矣。若夫貪名慕寵,嗜色[泳-永+(瑤-王)]聲,汶汶碌碌於浮雲蝸角J39nB459_p0722a18之人心,豈足論哉?護法雖然誠信,須從誠信之中,復J39nB459_p0722a19添個恒字。山僧曾擬恒字之形,以示人曰:「一日二六J39nB459_p0722a20時中,須豎個決定心,勿令此心少曲。暫如是,久亦如J39nB459_p0722a21是。常如是,變亦如是。順如是,逆亦如是。這不曲底心,J39nB459_p0722a22就是直養,就是生直,就是驀直去之直。這恒字,就是J39nB459_p0722a23行健,就是自強,就是乾乾夕惕之恒。」書至此,筆端愈J39nB459_p0722a24覺難禁。然葛藤繁興,且放過一邊。惟護法信之體之,J39nB459_p0722a25行之證之,剎那今古,切莫負此根器。

J39nB459_p0722a27吾兄朝夕精勤,自不厭煩,務在濟人利物。弟觀吾兄J39nB459_p0722a28之立志也,努力甚堅,其歲月之行也甚深,故得一方J39nB459_p0722a29施供,善者頂禮,惡者歡心。人天之因尚不爾違,則無J39nB459_p0722a30漏勝因可知矣。況復造請五大部,兼作水陸大佛事,J39nB459_p0722b01益見吾兄護法之誠、為道之切,所謂捨財定要大丈J39nB459_p0722b02夫,學道還須英靈子者也。但學道有七種難:看破世J39nB459_p0722b03情難,得決定信難,具端正眼難,遇真知識難,中途不J39nB459_p0722b04退難,必至究竟難,興慈運悲難。不為七難拘攣鉤鎖,J39nB459_p0722b05則一切無難耳。弟自愧薄劣,棄素著緇,脅不至蓆三J39nB459_p0722b06年,抱璞林下數載,而不敢有妄紹佛種之心。猥蒙吾J39nB459_p0722b07師收入聯芳,至楚還秦,亦不敢有與人為師之想。是J39nB459_p0722b08以息肩於山居僻處,養拙守貧,日飽芻粟,以度餘生。J39nB459_p0722b09多見法門中舉措不齊,有言實而行非者,有行實而J39nB459_p0722b10言非者,故不敢雕沙鏤玉,結草乖人。如古之至人,清J39nB459_p0722b11素之安命,神鼎之孤高,汾陽之待時,陳蒲鞋之守分,J39nB459_p0722b12不切於切,切於所當切,切之至也。今則不然,衒色求J39nB459_p0722b13名,不務於實,積金帛,搆是非,甚蛺蝶之尋芳、遊蜂之J39nB459_p0722b14捕蕊,若蚍蜉之慕腥膻於車塵馬足之間,不顧網羅J39nB459_p0722b15輪蹄之厄。爾本清墠,翅霄漢,麗天風,飲高露,而乃故J39nB459_p0722b16低飛而掠殘花,啖膻味,甚於蜂蟻蝶乎?此輩縱是盧J39nB459_p0722b17扁,亦治他不得。雖然,人能弘道,非道弘人,得人則興J39nB459_p0722b18而道存,失人則廢而道泯。人才之難,豈獨今時為然J39nB459_p0722b19哉?當時馬祖八十餘員之後,唱導者多,中間求一行J39nB459_p0722b20履見地的當人,如麟如鳳,如象如龍,不道全無,只是J39nB459_p0722b21稀少。僅有黃檗、臨濟、趙州、雲門、巖頭、曹洞諸大老,皆J39nB459_p0722b22是掉轉黃面老子宗說眼睛,照穿自己鼻孔,全機大J39nB459_p0722b23用,橫說豎說,自然合轍。建立宗旨,便有玄要料揀,賓J39nB459_p0722b24主照用,君臣偏正,棒喝與奪諸法。他不是挨門傍戶,J39nB459_p0722b25依稀彷彿做將來,卻是自己胸襟流出,蓋天蓋地底J39nB459_p0722b26物事。若是具得這個手眼,可以當下插標。如今都是J39nB459_p0722b27泛泛之徒、學語之流,旋蒸熱賣,但只學得一棒一喝,J39nB459_p0722b28語句下打得個之遶,便爾付拂子、寫源流,自謂他是J39nB459_p0722b29善知識也。不管宗旨明與不明、頭尾正與不正,可憐J39nB459_p0722b30生。且不從上,亦有將就做底善知識也,亦有半斗絲J39nB459_p0722c01之和尚也,爛羊續狗,累人累己。古人道:「見與師齊,減J39nB459_p0722c02師半德;見過於師,方堪傳授。」此語將來何用?縱有入J39nB459_p0722c03場底,都是些利徒,那有高山頂上看山下人趯把戲J39nB459_p0722c04弄鬼眼底,把將古人公案唱幾句山歌,和些油煙搭J39nB459_p0722c05在白紙上,見張說好,李也說好,張說高,李也說高,大J39nB459_p0722c06家隨口打喎喎,誰能緇素?誰能分別?檢點將來,名雖J39nB459_p0722c07說法而實攢利孔,不能消曠劫生死於今生,且留今J39nB459_p0722c08生之生死於曠劫,世道薄矣,人心壞矣。乃曰:人情濃J39nB459_p0722c09厚道情微,道用人情世豈知?空有人情無道用,人情J39nB459_p0722c10能有幾多時?只如抖擻於堪忍界中,白眼箕踞於松J39nB459_p0722c11樹之下,遍地人情,何道之有哉?到這裡挽轉頭來,人J39nB459_p0722c12情道情一時放卻,隨緣過日,好看那青山綠水、翠竹J39nB459_p0722c13黃花,欲取之而不禁,任運之而無差。果然富貴留人,J39nB459_p0722c14無如貧賤之肆志。上古之士去富學貧,此皆素位而J39nB459_p0722c15行,況復帝堯茆茨不剪,大禹卑其宮室,孔子食蔬飲J39nB459_p0722c16水,顏回陋巷簟瓢,古人之操守不恥惡衣惡食,謀道J39nB459_p0722c17不謀食,憂道不憂貧,此古人之常心。不然,則樹坐塚J39nB459_p0722c18棲,又成虛誕矣。何晚輩出家之流,濫冒闍黎之德,徒J39nB459_p0722c19假練若之尊,又不探古人行腳,亦不究自己性命,如J39nB459_p0722c20醉客之迷珠、若達多之認影,甘碌碌三三兩兩,掉手J39nB459_p0722c21踵足於世路之中流而不返,失其真妙覺明,闡揚一J39nB459_p0722c22生虛妄,驀然三寸氣斷,只一寒灰冷土。嗚呼!是者不J39nB459_p0722c23惟有愧於上古之大老,而亦無面目於地下也。所可J39nB459_p0722c24痛者,奪朱亂苗,維莠維紫,孰肯向香至王太子前一J39nB459_p0722c25臀坐斷舌根,他後無舌人解語,胡張三、黑李四能浼J39nB459_p0722c26我哉?此風既墮,大廈非一木可支,山中無事,信口亂J39nB459_p0722c27談,惹得吾兄覽之一笑。若有傍觀不肯,叫罵相期,而J39nB459_p0722c28弟幸矣。又況仲尼之行道於天下也,可謂至神至聖,J39nB459_p0722c29然至神至聖猶不免楚狂之歌、微生畝之說、晨門之J39nB459_p0722c30問;黃面老子之垂手也,可謂至道至德、至慈至悲,尚J39nB459_p0723a01不避馬麥金鎗之苦、旃遮孫陀之謗、調達之害。是二J39nB459_p0723a02老子之行腳也,亦莫逃於謗說。我今何人哉?今天下J39nB459_p0723a03之域,路若羊腸,僧如麻粟,知己同流者誰?邂逅相逢J39nB459_p0723a04者幾?弟觀吾兄志不隨流,心懷忠信,行履披落雁之J39nB459_p0723a05風,慈悲噴護鵝之味,又況於參有進,於機有投,嗟悼J39nB459_p0723a06同心,不減先哲之憂,而佛法大有望於吾兄也。前次J39nB459_p0723a07蒙兄遣弟愛下,為病所累,未能相伴,吾兄終以為恨J39nB459_p0723a08耳。吾兄諷誦《華嚴》,必在華嚴尋個下落,所以一部華J39nB459_p0723a09嚴世界海,惟一毘盧遮那身具之;此毘盧遮那身,惟J39nB459_p0723a10一釋迦妙性具之;此釋迦妙性,惟一眾生心具之。眾J39nB459_p0723a11生之煩惱無邊,故諸佛之法界亦無邊。眾生之念念J39nB459_p0723a12無際,故現相之菩薩亦無際。眾生之分別無窮,故文J39nB459_p0723a13殊之觀察妙慧亦無窮。眾生塵剎之妄想無盡,故普J39nB459_p0723a14賢之應化行門亦無盡。然是中有因有果,有體有用。J39nB459_p0723a15全果是因,全因是果。全用是體,全體是用。〈入法界品〉J39nB459_p0723a16之善財,乃自性之覺體。文殊普賢及五十餘員善知J39nB459_p0723a17識,乃性中所得之心法。斯則全因是果,全體是用也。J39nB459_p0723a18〈世主妙嚴〉至〈離世間品〉品中之毘盧遮那,乃如來藏J39nB459_p0723a19身之覺體。文殊普賢及信住行向地之諸菩薩,乃華J39nB459_p0723a20藏世界之本根。斯則全果是因,全用是體也。故知心J39nB459_p0723a21性覺圓,則藏身與法界全彰。智行具足,則文殊與普J39nB459_p0723a22賢共命。所謂應觀法界性,一切惟心造也。古德有云:J39nB459_p0723a23「若端的一回汗出,便向一莖草上現瓊樓玉殿。若未J39nB459_p0723a24端的一回汗出,縱有瓊樓玉殿,卻被一莖草蓋蔽。」所J39nB459_p0723a25以蟭螟入蚊眉不覺。為甚不覺?只因太近。若是吾兄J39nB459_p0723a26會得,干戈林裡橫身,色絲豈絆於跟下。荊棘叢中擺J39nB459_p0723a27手,十字無關於口邊。便可干木隨身,逢場作戲。有何J39nB459_p0723a28七種之難,拘攣鉤鎖,而不超越佛祖者哉。吾兄須如J39nB459_p0723a29山中亂談,以堅其志。
行實
J39nB459_p0723b01戊寅歲冬至日,兩序大眾至方丈請述行實,余不允。J39nB459_p0723b02眾啟求再三,義固難辭,遂據坐。乃云:「余乃建康江寧J39nB459_p0723b03人,先祖從明宦遊於秦,明運改革,遷至寧鎮。祖逝,移J39nB459_p0723b04居任春堡。父劉,母黃氏。順治甲午十二月二十五日J39nB459_p0723b05酉時,感異而生。年十六,在芸局邊與同學讀書,閱范J39nB459_p0723b06知府入山修行扯淡歌,乃嘆曰:『功名富貴,總是夢幻;J39nB459_p0723b07妻子兒女,無非空華;一切事業,實是一場扯淡。嘗聞J39nB459_p0723b08生死事大,無常迅速,墨花煙藻,詎免生死乎?』至年二J39nB459_p0723b09十,夜夢五色蓮華莊嚴寶塔,獨坐塔頂,僧眾圍遶念J39nB459_p0723b10佛。覺來念曰:『我此願力,何時得了?』遂自將刀斷髮,誓J39nB459_p0723b11死出家。父母約知親友,再三苦勸曰:『你去出家,丟下J39nB459_p0723b12年老父母,何人奉養?』余云:『在家奉養,口體之孝也;出J39nB459_p0723b13家修道,乃出世間之大孝,胡不許邪?』父母泣曰:『我今J39nB459_p0723b14六十有零,將死不久,我若死後,那時一任你去。』余不J39nB459_p0723b15覺淚下,默然而止。未及三年,父母俱逝,一切祭葬事J39nB459_p0723b16畢,年已二十有四。忽然思曰:『我此願力,今日可滿。』遂J39nB459_p0723b17寫遺書,封于匣內。是夜,踰城禮正覺潤和尚,乞求出J39nB459_p0723b18家。尚問:『父母在麼?』余曰:『俱逝。』尚云:『有妻子否?』余曰:『有J39nB459_p0723b19妻子。』尚云:『既有妻子,如何出家?』余曰:『聞佛捨國,我今J39nB459_p0723b20何人?』尚云:『我這裡不允。』余曰:『和尚不允,某甲別去尋J39nB459_p0723b21師。』尚云:『汝且暫住,再作商量。』留住數日,鑑其志不可J39nB459_p0723b22奪,尚遂披薙,命禮柏菴師為師。至晚,自入方丈,乞求J39nB459_p0723b23開示。尚云:『汝去念佛,看念佛是誰?』余應諾而出。一日,J39nB459_p0723b24余在殿簷頭立,尚問:『在此作麼?』余曰:『念佛。』尚云:『念佛J39nB459_p0723b25是誰?』余懞然不知,遂發憤參究,廢寢忘餐。初冬,半夜J39nB459_p0723b26經行,忽然有省,乃曰:『元來本是自己,何得向外馳求?』J39nB459_p0723b27次日,和尚圍爐,余呈偈,尚接得看過,扯碎拋入火中,J39nB459_p0723b28一頓詬罵:『汝等拋妻撇子出家,不幹實事,來弄虛頭。』J39nB459_p0723b29余抽身便出,滿面慚惶,自己追思:『還不是者個道理。』J39nB459_p0723b30仍前抖擻精神,苦苦參究。越明年,往鳴沙州,完具足J39nB459_p0723c01戒。期畢,至螺山隨喜,聞老宿舉臨濟在黃檗處喫棒J39nB459_p0723c02因緣,豁然把從前疑團當下脫落,乃曰:『縱然奇特,終J39nB459_p0723c03是尋常。』仍返正覺。尚問:『受戒了?』余曰:『受了也。』尚云:『那J39nB459_p0723c04邊一日有多長?』余曰:『缽盂兩度濕。』尚云:『又來弄虛頭。』J39nB459_p0723c05余曰:『和尚莫壓良為賤。』尚頷之。至晚,尚喚入方丈,曰:J39nB459_p0723c06『汝乃般若夙因,莫要在此久住,速下南方參學。』余曰:J39nB459_p0723c07『和尚年老,某甲在此侍奉。』尚云:『侍奉有人,不必繁慮。』J39nB459_p0723c08余即拜別,直造長安,首參興善、薦福,次謁風穴,又參J39nB459_p0723c09金粟。解制後至楚地廣教作參頭,半載為病所累,乃J39nB459_p0723c10百嘆曰:『我今薄福,雖處叢林,終日被病魔纏縛,想是J39nB459_p0723c11此處無緣。』遂帶病告假,遍參諸方,受盡饑寒,苦不可J39nB459_p0723c12堪。參歷豫章、吳越一帶叢林,撥草瞻風,又弗覺四載J39nB459_p0723c13矣。末後轉楚,行至東山阻雪,聞白雲象林和尚道風J39nB459_p0723c14孤高,鉗錘惡辣,因破雪至彼參見。尚問:『那裏來?』余曰:J39nB459_p0723c15『東山。』尚云:『如何是你行腳事?』余曰:『草鞋踏雪。』尚云:『意J39nB459_p0723c16旨如何?』余曰:『徹骨寒。』尚豎拳曰:『向這裏道道看。』余曰:J39nB459_p0723c17『少賣弄。』尚云:『杜撰禪和。』余拂袖便出,遂執侍左右,受J39nB459_p0723c18誨一載。癸亥春日,以源流頂像授之,余辭曰:『某尟能J39nB459_p0723c19薄德,敢當大任?』尚云:『老僧悉知,汝勿固辭。』余不敢違J39nB459_p0723c20命,即九拜受之,時年三十矣。受付囑後,仍歸陝西,拜J39nB459_p0723c21禮剃度師翁。季秋,至古邠皇澗寺息肩。未幾,有人報:J39nB459_p0723c22『師翁圓寂於五月矣。』余即易紙燭,設靈告香。闔郡檀J39nB459_p0723c23護聞余至,同本寺耆宿勉留開法,余堅辭再四,眾請J39nB459_p0723c24愈篤,不得已許之。修建藥師道場,兼立禪期百日,座J39nB459_p0723c25下緇素萬指有餘。期滿,永壽、馬九諸檀越慇懃敦請,J39nB459_p0723c26至彼未幾,緇素盈門,留住一月,即欲告辭。有馬某父J39nB459_p0723c27子捨基一所,同眾居士挽留,創建瑞巖,延余居焉。遂J39nB459_p0723c28辛苦幾年,一切事畢。於丁卯五月望日,貢士趙老先J39nB459_p0723c29生、明府祝公同諸信士為余立碑,遂住數載。康熙三J39nB459_p0723c30十一年春月,回正覺,與剃度師翁掃塔,高、玄二宿同J39nB459_p0724a01靈州檀護請鎮河塔,陞座說法,一時四眾聳動。弗料J39nB459_p0724a02中衛緇素謬聽虛聲,請住華嚴禪寺,祝聖開堂,座下J39nB459_p0724a03衲子千指圍遶。有養巨禪人、文學俞公同鎮靖闔堡J39nB459_p0724a04眾信請住寶慶禪寺,起建盂蘭道場,當道宰官誠敬J39nB459_p0724a05護衛。復同諸山耆宿、闔郡縉紳士庶請住觀音禪院,J39nB459_p0724a06結制安禪。期畢,萬佛洞耆宿、守府趙公同石空寺堡J39nB459_p0724a07眾信請萬佛洞住靜。未及數月,鎮臺李公族叔英宇J39nB459_p0724a08居士、協臺劉公伯玉、協臺楊公宗道得續師資之緣,J39nB459_p0724a09新建香山香巖禪寺,請於十月望日修建水陸佛事,J39nB459_p0724a10兼立禪期百日,道俗往來如織。期畢,欲回瑞巖休老,J39nB459_p0724a11協臺楊公、劉公、英宇居士同闔山數百餘人挽留,永J39nB459_p0724a12遠住持。自揣德寡行微,無能為任,不得已,權且應諾。J39nB459_p0724a13汝等大家盡知,又何必用我勞叨作麼?這樣薄劣之J39nB459_p0724a14狀,烏堪齒錄?外揚家醜,取笑大方,生平醜惡一時吐J39nB459_p0724a15露,天寒無煩久立。」一眾作禮,歡躍而退。
附創修瑞巖洞碑記
J39nB459_p0724a17永之村名馬九,以姓著之,當年蕃衍可知。邠風化存,J39nB459_p0724a18人心好善,與余裕家庄相鄰。道經此村,環山如屏,一J39nB459_p0724a19河如帶,盤桓而苦無同調。間與二三野老,倒一尊于J39nB459_p0724a20夕陽籬落間,野蔬甚甘,野語甚洽,野景可畫,咸嘆曰:J39nB459_p0724a21「昔時有禪院,殘廢久矣,何處尋遊覽一片地耶?」適古J39nB459_p0724a22夏頭陀,乃弱冠儒流而入禪者,禪號洗心,自金陵旋J39nB459_p0724a23古邠皇澗寺。村叟馬一貴、張汝喜,同眾紳衿聞名,敦J39nB459_p0724a24請禪師至本境,謀修香剎,不能聚材鳩工。師度形經J39nB459_p0724a25營,創闢一洞,題曰瑞巖。洞傍延客所、煮鐺所、臥榻所,J39nB459_p0724a26各有淨室。洞中像設,形好如生,鐘鳴鼓響,喚惺迷愚,J39nB459_p0724a27香繞燈明,焚修不輟。首祝 皇圖鞏固,與藎臣良吏,J39nB459_p0724a28介繁祉,育多男,更祈普會士庶,胥衍慶而未有艾也。J39nB459_p0724a29由是遠邇遊覽者,師一揮麈啟齒,賢而智者則豁然J39nB459_p0724a30心折,愚而悍者則改不善以回心。噫嘻!異矣哉!禪教J39nB459_p0724b01有裨於人心而淑氣質也。洞外鑿井而味孔甘,培樹J39nB459_p0724b02而蔭孔茂,雖蕞爾蘭若,非峨峨月宇之勝,無注目俶J39nB459_p0724b03詭之奇,而紆徑聳壁,鮮花綠竹,巖下幽棲,又是一洞J39nB459_p0724b04天,能令人忘歲月矣。幸逢明府祝老父臺,仁廉愛民,J39nB459_p0724b05善教翔洽,士庶佩德,頌之曰:「今日召、杜,善氣流轉,所J39nB459_p0724b06以時和年豐,盜息民安,災厲消而生聚昌,靈應覃敷,J39nB459_p0724b07福星正照,何一非瑞之感?何一非瑞之徵也哉?」方知J39nB459_p0724b08師之命名,非漫然而無謂也。余疏懶無能,養拙而甘J39nB459_p0724b09淪落,甲子歲瓜月,得瞻師丰采,暫聆玉屑,頓銷俗障,J39nB459_p0724b10欣然贈之以詩曰:「沖年了悟入禪林,一晤知師道行J39nB459_p0724b11深,座上高談渾古偈,洞中藏錄悉良箴。慈憐劫苦須J39nB459_p0724b12航渡,法化頑冥賴錫臨,愧我未明清淨理,白頭仍染J39nB459_p0724b13利名心。」師亦荅余偈語,如雪琴林磬,冷冷清遠,字字J39nB459_p0724b14琳瑯,愈信師為非常僧儔也。余門人馬繡,一貴之子;J39nB459_p0724b15馬錦,一官之子。父子世德,篤於善行,毅然布施,捨基J39nB459_p0724b16一所,修瑞巖洞,捨地十六畝,族人馬之龍捨地一畝,J39nB459_p0724b17以上地糧俱在原主,於以供香火,於以招名衲。古云:J39nB459_p0724b18「善有善報。」可卜其受福澤而未有艾矣。繡欲表師之J39nB459_p0724b19功德暨布施之姓氏,並垂不朽,欲後之人睹斯洞也,J39nB459_p0724b20眺斯景也,心曠神怡,觀感而增廓,觀感而勿替,因向J39nB459_p0724b21余乞言立石,俾行善之氣化轉運不息,瑞感之靈徵J39nB459_p0724b22相衍無窮。但余不能孔碩其辭,第以樸略質言而為J39nB459_p0724b23之記。

初晤洗心禪師訪記
J39nB459_p0724b30余鄙性愛與叢林大知識譚,人每以虛無尤之,卻不J39nB459_p0724c01知此中氣味自有一種迥出塵凡的妙處,未易領也。J39nB459_p0724c02辛未秋,移居五峰之陰,都人士相傳瑞巖有J39nB459_p0724c03洗禪師者真大和尚,余不覺鄙性遂熱,因不憚崎嶇J39nB459_p0724c04而詣乎其處。一入洞,即見清松帶露、綠竹含煙,曲徑J39nB459_p0724c05從半空中延至法堂,已知別是天地、非人間矣。及晤J39nB459_p0724c06禪師,氣宇果顒昂也、風度果瀟灑也,詢厥桑梓,則出J39nB459_p0724c07語錄以示之。余捧讀一過,方知為江左名士,自童年J39nB459_p0724c08涉此途,曾費了如許伐毛洗髓工夫,所以語語俱根J39nB459_p0724c09性天,全無一毫郛郭氣色犯其筆端,豈不是兩間不J39nB459_p0724c10朽文字?世謂名下無虛士者,非歟?或者謂業已僧矣,J39nB459_p0724c11焉用文為?噫!如若言,勢必使凡為僧者盡皆渾渾噩J39nB459_p0724c12噩而後止,不過與山間草木、林中鹿豕同耳,何足貴?J39nB459_p0724c13不見今之僧乎?稍諳楮墨,即為識者所賞,何況胸藏J39nB459_p0724c14八斗、學富三餘,且懷一段不矜不伐之德如禪師?試J39nB459_p0724c15問叢林中有幾人乎?文何縠于僧哉?文何縠于僧哉?J39nB459_p0724c16始知禪師果不可及,因附俚言以誌所感。
